Fishing News Summer 2008
The NMFS ban on pair trawling for herring in the Gulf Of Maine (GOM) this spring and summer has definitely helped. We are seeing a lot more life in the GOM than in the past several seasons. For decades prior to the pair trawlers, fishing for herring was done using purse seines. Not quite as efficient. There was still plenty of bait left around as forage food for other fish. When pair trawlers finish in an area there isn't a herring left in sight.
Masters Licenses Upgrades in hand: The Captain and Mate Mike DeCoste have received their Masters Licenses. Mate Rick Delacono and Capt. Bill Betters already had their Masters Licenses. I'm not aware of any other charter boat where the captain & ALL the mates have their Masters Licenses! If you wonder why we catch so many fish - look no further than the people working on the boat. There is no substitute for training and experience.
We are having a FANTASTIC year of fishing for Cod, haddock and Striped Bass.

Bent rods and screaming reels are the norm on the Sandy B. The Sandy B was built in 2000. She is 42 feet long and 18 feet wide with over 300 square feet of cockpit space. Catering to groups limited to 6 people maximum, we provide TONS OF ELBOW ROOM !!!! We have one of (if not the) largest, most stable charter fishing boats in the North East.
The Sandy B is powered by a 635 HP Electronic Cummins Diesel engine. Her wheelhouse is literally crammed with modern state of the art electronics. We find fish, and we stay on fish. Whether your pleasure is fishing for striped bass, cod fish and haddock, or giant Atlantic Bluefin Tuna, your charter hosts will consistently put you on the bite, and KEEP YOU ON THE BITE. When you are selecting a vessel to charter there are several factors to consider:
Q: How reliable is the vessel? A: You want to fish on a modern vessel that is professionally maintained. The Sandy B was launched in 2000. Her engine barely has 3000 hours - very few hours for a diesel engine. When you make a long drive from out of state, you want to be sure the boat will be ready to go - not broken down.
Q: Is the engine controlled electronically? A: An electronically controlled diesel doesn't "stink up" the boat with fumes. Diesel fumes make a lot of people seasick.
Q: How big is the boat? A: When fishing in the North East you want a large, stable platform for fishing. On marginal days when other boats cancel, we are fishing in comfort.
Q: Is there much available deck space for fishing? On smaller boats there isn't much space for fishing. We have over 300 square feet of open deck space. No crowding, fewer tangles.
Q: What does the vessel have on board for electronics and for fish finding? A: Older vessels tend to have older electronics. We are gadget freaks. Our fish finder is very high powered and state of the art. We also have a scanning sonar on board for locating fish.
Q: How experienced are the captain and crew? Most vessels have an experienced captain, and a mate that knows how to fillet (maybe). We pride ourselves on having mates that are also licensed master captains, AND they are professional fisherman.
Q: Are the captain and crew fun to fish with? A: We fish hard, there is no question about that. BUT - we also love to fish, and we want to have a lot of fun while we are fishing. If it were just a job, we wouldn't be there.

Note: Your next tuna charter is
FREE when a giant over 73
inches is landed. Our Federal permit requires the vessel to retain
possession of fish over 73 inches. Tail quarters, and head meat (awesome SUSHI)
can be prepared for the charter party to take home when a giant is landed. Customized trips, whale watch trips and combo trips available
upon request. Please contact the captain to arrange details. Gratuity: Our mates work for tips. A
minimum gratuity of at least
15-20% should be calculated into the cost of your charter. Deposit: $600.00 to reserve charter date Cancellation Policy: Deposits are non-refundable unless
cancelled at least 30 days prior to departure date, or if the charter is cancelled due
to weather conditions and we are unable to schedule a new date.
